The strategic initiative, led by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, was introduced by the Western Australian Government to address water security challenges and the impacts of climate change.
“The award highlights the collective effort of the 11 government agency and Aboriginal partners with a shared vision to transform Boorloo (Perth) and Bindjareb (Peel) into leading waterwise communities by 2030.
Through collaboration, innovative water saving initiatives and embedding Aboriginal knowledge, the program is advancing climate-resilience across Boorloo and Bindjareb,” said Penny Jackson (Acting Waterwise Program Manager).
Multi award winning Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2019 set the foundation for Boorloo and Bindjareb’s transition towards leading waterwise communities.
Kep Katitjin – Gabi Kaadadjan Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2 (2022–24) expanded to integrate Aboriginal environmental and cultural knowledge. The title means water knowledge in the Aboriginal Whadjuk and Bindjareb Noongar dialects, respectively.
The plan was developed with Danjoo Koorliny leaders and Bindjareb Elders to deliver initiatives to heal waterways and create lasting waterwise benefits on Whadjuk and Bindjareb Country.
“Congratulations to all who contributed to this innovative program,” said Penny.
Launched last year, the third iteration of the plan, Kep Katitjin – Gabi Kaadadjan Waterwise Action Plan 3 (2024–27) is continuing to drive collaboration across government, Traditional Owners, industry, research and community for enduring waterwise outcomes.
