WA Commissioner for Equal Opportunity Dr John Byrne said Marta's story, 'Wrong Skin' tragedy: death, drugs and violence in a divided town , was a tragic example of the impact systemic discrimination had on Aboriginal communities.
"There is no excuse for a state as resourceful as Western Australia to have communities with such poverty, sickness and despair," he said.
Dr Byrne congratulated Marta and encouraged more reporting of issues such as these, so people with the power to amend policies and procedures that neglected minority groups would ensure the issues were properly addressed.
"I hope to see more stories such as this, as when services only provide for a majority demographic and neglect the most vulnerable then the system has clearly failed and that is a reflection on the entire state," he said.
