Education sessions have recently been delivered in the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands by the Working with Children (WWC) Screening Unit who were promoting the 'Changes are coming!' message and ensuring individuals understand their rights and obligations under the Act.

The trip marked the halfway point of the 2023 WWC Screening Unit Regional and Remote Outreach Program, which has seen the team travel throughout Western Australia including the Peel, Great Southern, Wheatbelt, Midwest and Gascoyne regions to meet with communities and inform them of the upcoming legislation changes anticipated to take effect from 1 July 2023.

Interagency collaboration also provided the community, including key leaders, the opportunity to come together to meet all of the visiting agencies, discuss relevant community issues, ask questions and hear each agency’s updates. This demonstration of collaboration has had a positive impact on the local community, helping to build positive relationships and open communication channels.

Since the first workshop, delivered in the Peel region in February, the WWC team has delivered 43 sessions to more than 533 participants.

Some of the changes include the narrowing of access to parent and child volunteer exemptions and increased compliance powers.
