The National Principles for Child Safe Organisations

The National Principles provide a nationally consistent approach to embedding child safe cultures and practices at all levels in organisations of various sizes and across sectors that engage with children and young people, or where children and young people are present.

The 10 National Principles are:

  1. Child safety and wellbeing is embedded in organisational leadership, governance and culture.
  2. Children and young people are informed about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.
  3. Families and communities are informed and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.
  4. Equity is upheld and diverse needs respected in policy and practice.
  5. People working with children and young people are suitable and supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice.
  6. Processes to respond to complaints and concerns are child focused.
  7. Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep children and young people safe through ongoing education and training.
  8. Physical and online environments promote safety and wellbeing while minimising the opportunity for children and young people to be harmed.
  9. Implementation of the national child safe principles is regularly reviewed and improved.
  10. Policies and procedures document how the organisation is safe for children and young people.

Resources

The following resources are available to help WA organisations, children and young people, and parents, carers and guardians learn more about the National Principles.

Child Safe Organisations Knowledge Hub

The online knowledge hub brings together information and helpful resources about the National Principles in one central place for Western Australians to access, including:

  • Tailored information about the National Principles for organisations and community service providers; parents, carers and guardians; and children and young people.
  • A range of practical resources and examples to support organisations and community service providers to implement the National Principles.
  • Promotional tools to help organisations share how they are implementing the National Principles and committed to being a child safe organisation.

Please share the knowledge hub with others in your organisation and networks as appropriate.

We also welcome your feedback and ongoing suggestions for improving the hub which can be directed to csaroyalcommission@communities.wa.gov.au.

Mailing list

Organisations and stakeholders can also join our mailing list via the knowledge hub for occasional updates about the National Principles in WA, including information about practical resources and examples and events.
