Perth Zoo (Gibbon Enclosure)

Perth Zoo, formally recognised on the City of South Perth’s Heritage List, holds enduring cultural, social and architectural significance. Multiple generations of Western Australians have enjoyed visiting this much-loved place, and its recent conservation work highlights the importance of protecting locally listed heritage places.

The new primate crossing and Gibbon Enclosure – the first exhibit encountered upon entry – along with conservation and interpretation of historic structures, deepen visitors' understanding of the zoo's history and commitment to conservation. The project preserved significant heritage fabric while introducing engaging interpretive elements such as transparent signage offering “perspectives on the past”, audio storytelling and tactile displays that trace the evolution of animal care.

This project underscores the importance of conserving heritage buildings not only for their architectural value but for the stories they carry and the community connections they foster. Through thoughtful design and inclusive interpretation, the adapted structures now serve as engaging educational spaces celebrating the zoo’s legacy.

Perth Zoo’s heritage continues to enrich public understanding and community identity, proving that locally listed places are essential to Western Australia’s cultural landscape and deserve meaningful conservation.
