About the conference

As one of Western Australia’s leading heritage sector events, the conference celebrates the important role of heritage in shaping our State's social, cultural and economic identity, while highlighting its ongoing relevance to our communities.

Each year, the conference brings together heritage practitioners, community stakeholders, stewards of heritage-listed places, industry and government representatives from across Western Australia to deliver practical insights, exchange ideas and build connections.

This free-of-charge event offers in-person attendance and live online streaming opportunities, showcasing emerging trends, sector challenges and innovative approaches to heritage practice.

Theme

The 2027 theme is Heritage Horizons: Exploring heritage above, below and beyond, encouraging participants to look beyond traditional understandings of heritage and explore the many layers that shape our places, landscapes and communities.

• "Above" reflects the heritage that surrounds us every day, including cultural sites, buildings, streetscapes, collections and the people, traditions, practices and stories that give them meaning. It acknowledges both tangible and intangible heritage and the diverse experiences that have shaped Western Australia.
• "Below" encourages us to look beneath the surface, uncovering the deeper histories embedded in Country, archaeological evidence, hidden narratives and truths that have often been overlooked or excluded from heritage discourse. It invites exploration of places, sites and stories that remain under-recognised or are still being discovered and understood.
• "Beyond" challenges us to think creatively about the future, embracing new perspectives, evolving practices, innovative solutions and technology to ensure heritage remains relevant, inclusive and resilient. It pushes us to consider what we value and what we wish to carry forward, inviting us to explore what is on the horizon for the heritage sector and how we can prepare for emerging challenges and opportunities. As the 2029 bicentenary approaches, marking 200 years since the establishment of the Swan River Colony, participants are encouraged to reflect on what actions, approaches, partnerships and skills are needed.
