Summary of current fuel situation (17 April)

What was achieved this week:

  • WA’s fuel supply has been unaffected by the fire at Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery. The State does not receive fuel supply from this facility.

  • The State Government is buying 4 million litres of diesel to create a nation-leading strategic stockpile for Western Australia, with capacity to expand storage up to 12 million litres.

  • It will be a 100% state-owned diesel reserve and is in addition to the National stockpiles and regular domestic supplies.

  • The stockpile will allow the State Government to respond swiftly to acute shortages and shore up fuel security in regional areas.

  • This week the Western Australian Parliament ratified the use of special emergency powers under the Fuel, Energy and Power Resources Act 1972.

  • These special emergency powers have given Western Australia the most detailed supply chain information in the country. This means we can keep fuel flowing to where it is needed most.

  • Yesterday, WA petrol stations reported a total of 10 stockouts out of 771 stations statewide.

  • The Commissioner for Consumer Protection is writing to all fuel suppliers to compel information on the pricing of fuel to ensure the fuel excise cuts have been passed on to consumers.

  • Motorists are encouraged to keep checking FuelWatch to find the cheapest fuel in their area and to support those retailers who are doing the right thing by Western Australians.

What we are working to address:

  • Continuing our work through the Industry Support Working Group to identify key areas for support.

  • Establishing a pre-conflict fuel supply baseline to better understand and address petrol station outages.

  • Reviewing pricing data to ensure all fuel retailers pass on the fuel excise cuts to consumers in full.

  • Identifying additional opportunity sites across the State to further expand our strategic diesel stockpile.
