Summary of current fuel situation (10 April)

What was achieved this week:

  • Our emergency powers are already working - WA now has access to the most detailed supply chain information of any state, allowing us to pinpoint problems and solve them quickly.
  • We have put this information to good use – working with fuel companies and distributors over the Easter weekend to minimise fuel distribution issues.

  • Petrol stations reporting stockouts fell from 61 last Friday to 18 today (out of 771 stations statewide).

  • We’re expanding FuelWatch to include every fuel retailer across the State from 1st May and have increased fines for those who don’t accurately report their prices.

  • We’re also making it mandatory for fuel retailers to report to FuelWatch when they are out of fuel.

  • Additional fuel is flowing into Western Australia, with BP confirming they have secured an extra tanker of diesel on top of their normal 10 shipments in April.

  • Fuel companies continue to remain confident that fuel shipments for April will arrive as planned.

  • We’re keeping flights more affordable for Regional Western Australians by extending the Regional Airfare Zone Cap (RAZC) scheme – despite jet fuel prices continuing to rise.

  • Larger triple-trailer road trains will be permitted to travel along Great Northern Highway between Wubin and Muchea - helping to deliver fertiliser, fuel and other essential freight to regions more efficiently.

  • We’re also supporting freight operators to transport more milk and perishable food by allowing trucks to carry an additional 10 tonnes per load.

What we are working to address:

  • Keeping the WA economy strong through the work of Industry Support Working Group identifying areas for government support.

  • Using the data from fuel companies to assess where government action is needed to support fuel distribution.

  • Continue working with industry and the Commonwealth to clarify expected fuel shipments arriving in May.
