The Aboriginal In-Home Support Service (AISS) program is designed to assist Aboriginal families where children are at imminent risk of entering care and support them to be reunified with children currently in care.

AISS is a metropolitan service and aims to provide intensive in-home support to Aboriginal families with complex needs to divert them from the care system.

A consortium called Wungening Moort currently delivers the Aboriginal In-home Support Service. Key elements of the model include:

  • Families are identified and referred by the Department
  • The program provides culturally safe and responsive service provision
  • The service streams support families to keep children safe at home and support families to get children back home safe (reunification)
  • The service streams provide intensive in-home practical support and support families to address issues impacting their parenting skills.
  • The service stream support families to access other community support services and identify and develop safe family networks that are positive, supportive and help keep children safe.
  • The program is subject to an independent evaluation.
