Carers at the heart of learning

Learn how WA family and foster carers shape and deliver learning for carers and staff at the Department of Communities.
Last updated:

Foster and family carers contribute their lived experience to learning at the Department of Communities. Their involvement in the design and delivery of training helps ensure it is practical, relevant and supports carers of children and young people. Carers who formally participate in our learning programs are paid for their time.

As a carer, you may be able to participate in the development of learning opportunities as a panel member, co-presenter, guest speaker, or as a member of the Carer Advisory Group.

If you are interested in participating in learning opportunities, please contact the team to discuss further at fosterworkshops@communities.wa.gov.au.

Carer Learning Advisory Group

The Carer Learning Advisory Group plays an important role in guiding and strengthening learning. It comprises eight family and foster carers from across Western Australia, bringing diverse perspectives and experiences. Carers participate through an expression of interest process.

Members reflect a mix of metropolitan and regional carers, with both new and experienced carer perspectives. The group includes at least two members who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Meeting quarterly, the group provides advice on current and future learning design and delivery that benefits carers throughout their learning journey.

Carers in Learning

Carers contribute to a range of learning opportunities across the Department of Communities, including both carer and staff training. They share their experience through discussions, presentations and other activities, helping to build understanding and support effective practice.

Preparation for new foster carers

Carers are involved in learning for prospective foster carers, sharing their experiences and practical insights to support applicants in understanding the role. Their participation helps ensure learning is grounded in real‑world experience and is consistently valued by participants.

Learning for staff working with carers

Carers contribute to staff training by sharing their experiences of assessment and working with the Department. This may include participating in facilitated discussions or panel sessions.

These contributions provide insight into the caring journey, helping staff to better understand carer perspectives and supporting more effective and collaborative practice.
