About State Disability Advocacy Program recommissioning

The Department of Communities (Communities) is progressing the recommissioning of the State Disability Advocacy Program (the Program).

The Program funds individual and systemic advocacy services that support people with disability to have their rights upheld, their voices heard and access the supports and services they need.

Why this work is happening

This work builds on Communities' 2025 Review of Disability Investments and feedback from community and sector consultation. Recommissioning will help ensure the program remains fit for purpose, continues to deliver strong independent advocacy and responds to changes across the disability sector.

Communities is seeking to build on the strengths of the current program while identifying opportunities to improve outcomes for people with disability.

Current program

Ongoing funding for the State Disability Advocacy Program was approved in the 2025-26 State Budget.

Current program funding and services will continue while this work is underway.

No decisions have been made regarding program design, commissioning approaches and procurement settings.

Consultation and engagement

Communities recognises the expertise and experience of people with disability, advocacy organisations and broader sector stakeholders.

Communities will undertake targeted and proportionate stakeholder engagement as part of the recommissioning process. Engagement will build on previous consultation and focus on sharing emerging insights and testing options to inform future program design and commissioning approaches.

Engagement activities are expected to begin during the second half of 2026 and will be designed to be inclusive and accessible. Opportunities for relevant stakeholders to participate will be communicated as early as possible.

Communication

Communities will be transparent throughout the recommissioning process, including communicating what is in scope, key constraints and how stakeholder feedback will inform policy and commissioning decisions.

Communities will continue to provide information as it becomes available.

Next steps

Communities is currently undertaking planning and preparation activities. Stakeholder engagement and program redesign work will be undertaken in the second half of 2026, with further information shared as the project progresses.
