Primary care nursing in the Department of Justice’s custodial facilities provides new opportunities for your career. This diverse role involves care coordination, disease prevention and health promotion.

Corrective Services employs suitably qualified nurses across a broad range of roles to provide direct care to diverse patient groups in custody in a primary care setting.

The Health Services team at the Department of Justice is proud of the high quality, patient-centred, trauma informed care provided to prisoners and detainees in our custodial facilities.

Working in Health Services Centres in prisons and the juvenile detention centre offers nurses the opportunity to work within small, nurse-led clinics.

As a nurse working in our accredited health service centres, your role will include comprehensive nursing assessments, identifying health issues, care planning to implement nursing interventions and evaluation of care provision to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

The role

We are looking for nurses who:

  • Are goal oriented, flexible and committed to contributing positively to team culture and workplace.
  • Have a demonstrated understanding of nursing codes of practice.
  • Have advanced written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Have well-established advanced clinical knowledge and nursing skills with a minimum of four years’ experience.
  • Value working collaboratively with other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Eligibility

To be eligible for appointment as a nurse under the Department of Justice you will need to meet the requirements as outlined in the specific job description form.

Some positions require a current Working with Children check, or the ability to successfully apply for one (this check is undertaken by the Department).

For all nursing positions, you must:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, hold Australian permanent residency or have a valid working visa for Australia.
  • Have current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Authority.
