Kimberley Juvenile Justice Strategy

A WA Government program to support community-led, place-based initiatives across the Kimberley that improve Aboriginal youth wellbeing and community safety and address the overrepresentation of Aboriginal young people in the justice system.
Last updated:

Led by the Department of Justice, the Kimberley Juvenile Justice Strategy (KJJS) is a WA Government initiative to reduce offending and help prevent young people entering the justice system.

The KJJS does this by supporting programs that engage Aboriginal young people living in the Kimberley in culturally safe and culturally appropriate activities that steer them away from the justice system.

The KJJS was developed in response to stories and ideas for solutions from young people and leaders across the Kimberley. This includes findings from the 2013 Coronial Inquest into the deaths of Aboriginal young people in the Kimberley, an extensive region-wide consultation led by the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre, the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and the WA Government’s Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy.

Since the initial 2019-2020 State budget funding, the WA Government has invested around $26.7 million in the KJJS. KJJS initiatives are designed to meet the needs of the local community and are delivered by, or in partnership with, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and/or Aboriginal Corporations.
