Originally from the UK, Colin moved to Newman 11 years ago, where he found not just a new home, but a sense of community.

“I definitely didn’t expect to be living in Newman for over a decade,” he says. “But with family already here and great job opportunities, it just made sense to stay.”

Colin made the jump into youth justice; thanks to a recommendation from his wife, who worked in Adult Corrections.

“She suggested I give it a go, and I’m really glad I did,” he says. “It’s a completely different kind of work, and it’s incredibly rewarding.”

He brought experience working with youth to Australia, having worked as a swim teacher and a martial arts instructor – skills that help him connect with the young people he supports.

“I’m really passionate about working with young people, especially Aboriginal young people in the regions.”

Colin said it was rewarding to be working with the community, with Elders, seeing improvements.

“It’s a fantastic way to help young people build a better future.”

Colin works with young people on community-based orders, many of whom are dealing with complex social issues.

“My role is about understanding their needs and linking them with the right support - whether it’s grief counselling, drug and alcohol services, or other help,” Colin said.

The work can be challenging, but Colin finds it very rewarding. "Everything we do is genuine and supportive," he says. "It’s fantastic when we get things right."

Living and working in Newman has its benefits, too. Colin enjoys the quiet, close-knit community and the lifestyle that comes with it.

“You’re away from the hustle and bustle of the city, enjoying WA’s beautiful outback and of course traffic is never a problem!”

Colin encourages others to consider the role.

"If you’re someone who values meaningful connections and wants to help people make real changes in their lives, this job is worth looking into."
