Rhiannon- Youth Justice Officer

Originally from Perth, Rhiannon moved to Kalgoorlie to support her partner’s new role as a firefighter. With no previous experience working with young people, she began her career with the Department of Justice in Court and Tribunal Services.

When a Youth Justice Officer position opened up, she saw an opportunity to work more directly with young people in the community, supporting them to make positive choices and helping to divert them away from the justice system.

"I never anticipated such a meaningful and rewarding role, but I truly believe this is where I’ll be for the long haul,” Rhiannon reflects.

What she found was a job that offers the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives. Rhiannon is passionate about early intervention, helping young people address the causes of offending and guiding them toward better choices.

“Every young person is different. They all teach us something new and present with their own challenges.”

Whether it’s helping someone find employment, to build social connections, or feel heard, Rhiannon adjusts her approach to individual needs.

“Success looks different for everyone. It’s rewarding to support young people at different stages of their lives and see them make positive changes that lead to more fulfilling futures.”

Rhiannon enjoys the perks of her role, including a regional allowance and subsidised rent which is available for eligible applicants.

Outside of work, Rhiannon stays active through sport and enjoys the strong sense of community that Kalgoorlie offers.

“The first thing I did when I moved here was join a footy team. It was a great way to connect with people and feel part of the community.”

When asked what makes someone successful in youth justice, she said:

“Compassion, communication, genuine care, confidence, and the ability to build strong relationships.”

Rhiannon’s story shows that you don’t need prior experience to make a meaningful impact; just the right mindset and support.
