We are seeking motivated and enthusiastic medical professionals who enjoy working autonomously and as part of a team, in a safe, well organised, and clinically challenging General Practitioner service.

The Prison Medical Officer functions in accordance with the Prisons Act 1981 by providing high quality general medical management in a primary health care setting, to male and female patients across the adult and juvenile custodial estates.

The Prison Medical Officer also provides out of hours advice through a rostered on-call system.

Applicants must have a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply for one to be eligible for appointment to this position. You are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Medical Practitioner.

About the role

The principle of equivalence of care in prison medicine requires that the quality and standard of health care provided to prisoners is the same as that provided in the community through the public health system. The service is accredited against the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for Health Services in Australian Prisons demonstrating our commitment to providing high quality safe and effective patient care.

Working in a primary care setting, as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Prison Medical Officer functions in accordance with the Prisons Act 1981 by providing high quality general medical management in a primary health care setting, to male and female patients across the adult and juvenile custodial estates. The Prison Medical Officer also provides out of hours advice through a rostered on-call system.

The Prison Medical Officer works closely with health centre staff (nurses, receptionists, and allied health) and prison staff in planning, organising, and managing the provision of health care. Clinics are held in person with an alternative telehealth or video call options available dependent on site location.

The Department offers several amazing employee benefits including:

  • Monday to Friday standard work hours of 75 hours fortnight, excluding weekends and public holidays.
  • A Departmental mobile phone provided for rostered after hours on-call shifts with generous call back allowance payable if any work is undertaken.

To be considered for employment in this role, applicants will need to provide evidence of their vaccination status (unless a valid medical exemption is granted by the Chief Health Officer (CHO)).
