The role

You could be working with families, young offenders or adult offenders, running therapeutic programs or involved in forensic assessments and research.

Working in various teams in community, custodial and home-based settings alongside other psychologists or in multi-disciplinary teams, you could work in:

  • psychological services and programs with youth
  • adult therapeutic programs - community interventions branch
  • the dangerous sex offender team - clinical governance unit
  • the forensic consultant team - clinical governance unit
  • research and evaluation - clinical governance unit
  • prison counselling - clinical services branch
  • adult community psychological services
  • employee welfare/human resources recruiting.

If you have a background in clinical, counselling or forensic psychology and you are a registrar or have a specialist title, DOJ has post-graduate employment opportunities that may suit you. There are also opportunities to advance into senior clinician and management roles.

Eligibility

When positions are advertised, the eligibility requirements will be outlined in the individual job advertisement. Depending on the requirements of the position, a current Working with Children check or ability to successfully obtain one, may be required to be eligible for appointment as a psychologist (this check is undertaken by the Department).

You'll need a minimum 4-year degree in psychology and be eligible for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
