Registered Mental Health Nurse

Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drug (MHAOD) nursing staff are autonomous, compassionate, critical thinkers who deliver quality mental health care to some of Western Australia’s most vulnerable and complex individuals.
Last updated:

Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drug (MHAOD) nurses work in prisons across the State, operating alongside other clinical, cultural, and custodial services to deliver the best possible outcomes for prisoners with MHAOD needs.

Prison MHAOD services are currently undergoing unprecedented expansion and innovation, with the WA Government making significant investments in specialist MHAOD Units as follows:

  • The Bindi Bindi Mental Health Unit is a specialist unit and first of its kind in Western Australia. The unit caters to women with diagnosed mental health conditions and includes a range of allied health services to help create a therapeutic and safe environment.
  • Casuarina Mallee Rehabilitation Centre is a voluntary nine-month residential program targeting adult males who have AOD related needs.
  • The Bunbury AOD Reintegration Service is due to commence operation in August 2023 and aims to establish meaningful AOD reintegration and relapse prevention partnerships to support people working toward recovery.
  • A second Mental Health unit has been proposed and will cater to the male population. The unit will provide a step-up and step-down service depending on the acuity of the client and the interventions required.

By joining the MHAOD Team now, you can be part of this positive transformation and with prisons all over WA there are opportunities for both metropolitan and regional employment. If you are looking for a lifestyle change and wish to further your career in a dynamic, diverse, and supportive environment, consider joining the DoJ MHAOD team.
