Weed management at Tharra
The Budadee Rangers delivered their first project through the Pilbara Environmental Offsets Fund (PEOF) in the control of invasive weeds at Tharra, also known as Woodstock Abydos Protected Reserve. The project improved vegetation condition in Tharra through understanding the prevalence and impact of weeds (Stage 1, 2021) and actively managing priority weeds (Stage 2, 2022 – 2024). The focus of the project was the declared pest Calotropis procera, a recently established and aggressive weed spreading through Palyku Country. Learn more here.

Funding and program scope

In December 2024, Stage 3 of this project was approved for funding by the Minister for Environment. Budadee Aboriginal Corporation will receive $1,977,760 over five years to continue and expand on their weed management program at Tharra and the surrounding area. The project aims to control and eradicate the highly invasive weed species Calotropis procera along rivers and creeks, alongside other priority weeds such as Vachellia farnesiana and Argemone ochroleuca.

On-Country engagement and project development

In 2025, the PEOF team spent time on country with Elders and Budadee Rangers. Early discussions were held for the next round of projects at Tharra to improve vegetation and habitat for species like the Northern Quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus) and Pilbara leaf-nosed bat (Rhinonicteris aurantia). The PEOF team was shown sites treated for Calotropis to demonstrate the effectiveness of Budadee’s ongoing control efforts at Tharra.
