As the head of Energy Policy WA, the Coordinator of Energy has statutory responsibilities in Western Australia's energy framework.

Some of the responsibilities include rule-making responsibilities for the Wholesale Electricity Market, Gas Services Information and Pilbara Networks.

Responsibility for the administration and rule-making functions of the Wholesale Electricity Market Rules and Gas Services Information Rules and the Pilbara Network Rules was transferred from the former Rule Change Panel to the Coordinator of Energy on 1 July 2021.
