In 2023, Australian environment ministers agreed that Western Australia would lead a national collaborative project investigating and assessing options for end-of-life tyres.

This project sought to understand of the problems associated with end-of-life tyres, including off-the-road tyres, used in industries such as mining, agriculture and construction.

The project also considered issues and options for end-of-life conveyor belts and rubber tracks.

The project assessed possible policy solutions (including product stewardship) that are more likely to be suitable in the Australian context, while aiming to manage these end-of-life products to be consistent with the waste hierarchy and a circular economy.

As part of the outcomes of this national project, two reports have been prepared:

National End-of-Life Tyres Options project – Project report

The project report identifies a range of issues with end-of-life tyres and assesses possible policy solutions (including regulated product stewardship), along with conveying the project’s findings.

The investigation report sets out some key challenges and opportunities associated with off-the-road tyres and related products (used in industries such as mining, agriculture and construction), as well as presenting some case studies of processing technologies and waste derived products.

The two reports aim to inform future consideration of options for end-of-life tyres and support informed dialogue amongst the range of interested stakeholders and can be downloaded via the links below.
