The Equal Opportunity Commission’s Strategy, Engagement and Education team delivers training on the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA), focused on helping people understand their rights and responsibilities in relation to discrimination, harassment and vicitimisation.

Group sizes

Most courses require a minimum of eight participants.
Maximum group size varies depending on the course content and venue, allowing for meaningful discussion and participation.
 

Our Training Courses

Our training programs cover a wide variety of subjects relevant to The Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA). 

We provide fee-for-service programs designed for public and private sector organisations, and free training courses for community organisations. 

Our courses can be accessed through in-house training (in the Equal Opportunity Commission's dedicated training rooms) or delivered to your organisation at a location of your choosing. You can view and register for available in-house courses under 'Available Courses' below.

Community Education Courses

Equal Opportunity Commission community education courses are free for not-for-profits, community groups, volunteers, individuals utilising not-for-profit services, and some NGOs. 

Sessions can cover:

  • The role and functions of the Equal Opportunity Commission

  • Understanding unlawful discrimination, harassment and bullying

  • Rights and responsibilities in areas such as employment, accommodation and education under state and federal legislation

  • How policies, procedures and practices may constitute discrimination

  • Responding to and handling complaints

  • Taking action/bystander training

The Strategy, Engagement and Education team are available to participate in conferences, forums, meetings, podcasts, and community workshops to deliver presentations tailored to your audience.

All of the courses listed below are hosted at the Commission's offices within Albert Facey House (across from the Perth train station) in the Perth CBD. All training offerings can be adapted to be delivered in a hybrid mode (in person and online).

Contact Officer Training

A Contact Officer is a trained and impartial initial point of contact for employees who have questions or concerns about discrimination, harassment or victimisation in the workplace.

Contact Officers do not investigate complaints or advocate for any party. Contact Officers support early, informed decision-making and help people understand their choices, including appropriate self-management, informal and formal processes and the option of referring to external bodies. 

As a Contact Officer, your role will be to listen, provide clear information about rights, responsibilities and available options under WA law, and explain internal and external complaint pathways.

The one-day Contact Officer workshop will:

  • Introduction to the role of Contact Officer

  • Anti-discrimination statutes

  • Understanding discrimination, harassment, bullying and victimisation

  • Responsibility and liability

  • Complaints handling

  • Contact interviews

Duration: One full day: 9.00am - 4:00pm

Cost (incl GST): $417 per person (morning tea and light lunch provided)

Grievance Officer Training

A Grievance Officer is responsible for managing formal workplace complaints relating to discrimination, harassment or victimisation in a fair, timely and confidential manner.

A Grievance Officer is involved in handling workplace complaints relating to discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

Depending on the policies and procedures of each organisation, the role of a Grievance Officer can include receiving complaints, assessing them against relevant policies and legislation, and overseeing or conducting complaint handling processes in line with procedural fairness principles.

Grievance Officers ensure that all parties understand the process, their rights and responsibilities, and the possible outcomes. They do not act as an advocate for any party.

As a Grievance Officer, your role is part of an organisation’s process of ensuring complaints are handled fairly, lawfully, confidentially and in a timely manner.

The two-day Grievance Officer course will equip you to perform both the Contact Officer and Grievance Officer roles.

Day One:

  • Introduction to the role of Contact Officer

  • Anti-discrimination legislations

  • Understanding discrimination, bullying and harassment

  • Responsibility and liability

  • Complaints handling

  • Contact interviews

Day Two:

  • The role of Grievance Officer and the process

  • Practising the role of Grievance Officer

Please note that this course does not cover investigation skills.

Duration: Two full days: 9.00am - 4:00pm

Active Bystander Skills in the Workplace

The Active Bystander Skills in the Workplace training focuses on helping people understand what an active bystander is and how active bystanders can help when they see discrimination or harassment occur in the workplace.

This training provides participants with the knowledge and skills to act in response to unacceptable behaviours, especially in the workplace.

The training:

  • Explains what it means to be an active bystander and why it is valuable 

  • Examines the context of situations and explores the considerations that impact actions

  • Places participants in real life scenarios to develop practical skills to bring to the workplace and other settings

  • Uses adult learning principles to value and include participants’ lived experience

Duration: Four hours: 9:00am - 1:00pm

Cost: $302 per person

Equal Opportunity Law for the Community Services Sector

The Equal Opportunity Law for the Community Services Sector training focuses on helping people understand their rights and responsibilities in relation to discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

This training covers equal opportunity law and pays particular attention to the skills that are required when working within community service organisations and teams.

The training:

  • Expands participants’ understanding of discrimination, harassment and victimisation

  • Builds skills to respond to behaviours related to discrimination and harassment

  • Develops skills to respond to the unique workplace cultures and practices within the community services sector

  • Uses adult learning principles to value and include participants’ lived experience and knowledge 

Note: Training can be customised to address specific issues covered within equal opportunity legislation such as race and disability discrimination.

Duration: Three hours: 9:00am - 12:00pm

Cost: Free for community sector groups and organisations

Grievance Handling for Managers and HR Officers

The Grievance Handling for Managers and HR Officers training focuses on helping managers and HR professionals understand equal opportunity law, and how they can handle challenges as they arise in the workplace.

This training educates managers and HR professionals about equal opportunity law. Participants will learn and practice the skills required to handle challenging issues in the workplace, including issues that may develop into complaints or grievances if not addressed.

The training: 

  • Explores and explains key concepts in equal opportunity legislation and other relevant legislation

  • Considers the function of good policy and procedures, including how they relate to a participant’s role within their organisation

  • Practises the basic skills required to handle complaints and grievances 

  • Provides participants with the confidence and skills to prevent issues escalating into grievances

Duration: Four hours: 9:00am - 1:00pm

Cost: $302 per person

Improving Workplace Culture

The Workplace Culture training focuses on the importance of ensuring the development of a positive workplace culture.

This training educates participants on addressing discrimination, harassment and bullying in the workplace by applying equal opportunity law, and helps them build the skills needed to create a respectful workplace.

The training:

  • Develops participants’ understanding of discrimination, harassment, bullying and victimisation

  • Assists participants to identify and understand the dynamics that shape workplace culture

  • Builds skills to think critically and respond to behaviours related to discrimination and harassment 

  • Uses adult learning principles to incorporate participants’ lived experience and organisational knowledge into the learning process

Duration: Four hours: 9:00am - 1:00pm

Cost: $302 per person

Introduction to Equal Opportunity Law

This course introduces participants to equal opportunity law within Western Australia and the Commonwealth.

Introduction to Equal Opportunity Law informs participants about how statutes operate and helps them understand how equal opportunity law protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation in the workplace and other areas of public life.

The training program also aims to educate participants about the obligations and responsibilities that the law places on individuals and organisations.

The training: 

  • Explains the meaning of discrimination, harassment and victimisation

  • Builds understanding of responsibility and liability in relation to discrimination and harassment

  • Informs participants about options for responding to workplace discrimination and harassment

  • Uses adult learning principles to value and incorporate participants’ lived experience and knowledge

Duration: Two hours: 9:00am - 11:00am

Know Your Rights: Understanding Discrimination and Harassment for CaLD Communities

The Know Your Rights course is delivered free of charge for not-for-profits, community groups, volunteers, individuals utilising not-for-profit services, and some NGOs.

This course is designed for people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, including people from migrant backgrounds and international students. 

It builds understanding of rights in relation to discrimination, harassment and victimisation and supports participants to develop the skills necessary to prevent and respond to these issues.

The training:

  • Develops participants’ understanding of discrimination, harassment, bullying and victimisation

  • Supports participants to recognise unsafe or unlawful behaviour in workplaces, education institutions and other areas of public life

  • Strengthens confidence to seek support, access help and take action

  • Uses adult learning principles to value and include participants’ lived experience and knowledge

Note: Each participant is provided with resources, including plain language materials, practical examples, and an information booklet with support services.

Duration: Four hours: 9:00am - 1:00pm

Cost: Free for not-for-profits, community groups, volunteers, individuals utilising not-for-profit services, and some NGOs.

One-on-One Customised Education

One-on-one sessions education sessions are available upon request.

The content of one-on-one sessions is determined by the needs of each individual participant and the organisation to which they belong. 

For example, an organisation may wish for an employee or team member to increase their knowledge and skills in relation to one of the training modules listed. Our team can work with individuals to deliver a customised education session that meets their needs and time constraints.

Respect at Work

This course builds understanding of responsible and respectful workplace behaviour, with a particular focus on preventing and responding to sexual harassment.

The Respect at Work course educates participants about responsible and respectful workplace behaviour, with a particular focus on addressing sexual harassment.

The training:

  • Explains the meaning of sex discrimination, sexual harassment and sex-based harassment

  • Develops participants’ ability to recognise hostile workplace behaviour and understand how it relates to workplace culture

  • Strengthens participants’ understanding of liability and responsibility, and engages them in practising skills to respond to hostile behaviour

  • Uses adult learning principles to value and include participants’ lived experience and knowledge

Duration: Two hours: 9:00am - 11:00am

Cancellation Policy

Below is the Equal Opportunity Commission's course cancellation policy. Please provide as much notice as you can in the event you need to cancel your registration or change your registration details.

Cancellation

Cancellations received more than five (5) working days prior to commencement of the course will be free of charge.

Cancellations received less than five (5) working days prior to commencement of the course may be charged the full fee unless a valid reason can be provided for the cancellation.

Cancellations should be provided in writing by email to training@eoc.wa.gov.au

Substitution of another participant

Substitutions may be made at any time up to the commencement of the course by calling the Equal Opportunity Commission on 9216 3927 or email training@eoc.wa.gov.au

No shows

Enrollees who do not attend the course will be charged the full fee.

Enrollees who do not attend due to illness or other significant reason may be transferred to another course upon receipt of a medical certificate or valid verification.

Courses cancelled by the Equal Opportunity Commission

The Commission will aim to provide at least five (5) working days notice if it needs to cancel a course. In the event a course is cancelled by the Commission all enrollees will be notified and be offered a place on the next available program. Enrollees will not be charged for the cancelled course.
