Collaboration and engagement

This project was approved for funding by the Minister for Environment and groundwork started in May 2024.

The project area falls within the Nyamal Native Title determination area. In accordance with the PEOF co-design and engagement framework, discussions continue between both Nyamal Aboriginal Corporation (NAC), the pastoral lessee and the PEOF. Discussions ensure this project aligns with and supports Traditional Owner objectives for managing Country.

Project scope and funding

Pilbara Ecological will receive approximately $1.3 million in funding over five years to progress eradication of Parkinsonia aculeata along the Oakover River, downstream of the old Braeside Homestead on Warrawagine Station, near Purungunya Conservation Estate. The project aims to improve an estimated 2,000 ha of riparian vegetation with a 20-year goal of localised eradication and reduced colonisation of Parkinsonia downstream.

Initial management activities

From July to October 2024, a total of 2,203 adult and juvenile Parkinsonia plants were treated, and 5,000 seedlings were sprayed. Noogoora Burr (Xanthium occidentale) has also been opportunistically removed in areas. Although the Noogoora Burr elimination is not a primary outcome for this project, it is a declared pest under the Western Australian Biosecurity and Agricultural Management Act 2007.

Future management directions

Expansion of Oakover project activities may include management of grazing pressures along the riparian edge, fire management and management of large feral herbivores. Both riparian vegetation and good to excellent vegetation are required to be offset through the PEOF as a requirement under Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act 1986, through implementation conditions in Ministerial Statements.

Stakeholder support and alignment

NAC supports the project and is confident the activities will complement existing efforts both upstream and further west around Purungunya Conservation Estate, where the Nyamal ranger team is delivering another PEOF project.
