The Office of the Coordinator General

We streamline regulatory approvals for strategically significant projects and precincts to drive investment, jobs and decarbonisation in Western Australia.

The Western Trade Coast is being declared Western Australia’s first State Development Area under the State Development Act 2025, to plan for the future of the State’s premier industrial region. Visit the Western Trade Coast State Development Area page for more details.

Our purpose and role

The Office of the Coordinator General works across the WA Government to activate major State-significant projects and industrial precincts for the benefit of Western Australia.

The Office of the Coordinator General supports the delivery of investment-ready precincts, helps unlock enabling infrastructure, and provides greater certainty for industry, government and communities.

For Priority Projects, this increases certainty for proponents while maintaining appropriate environmental, cultural and community safeguards. For State Development Areas, the Coordinator General ensures the future of each precinct is planned through the integrated consideration of economic, environmental and social factors.

What we don’t do

The Office of the Coordinator General does not replace existing regulators, decision‑makers or statutory assessment processes. Decisions on environmental, heritage, planning and cultural matters continue to be made by the relevant authorities under their respective legislation.

The State Development Act does not remove or override existing approval requirements. Instead, it provides a framework for improved coordination, early engagement and more efficient decision making across government, while maintaining established safeguards and responsibilities.

Legislative framework

Passed in late 2025, the State Development Act provides a contemporary framework to streamline complex approvals, reduce duplication of processes and accelerate major developments that support WA’s clean energy transition, economic diversification and long-term prosperity.

The State Development Act was designed to be adaptable to changing government priorities and policy settings, so that it may be used to rapidly seize future opportunities and emerging industries.

To support understanding of how the current WA Government intends to implement the State Development Act, the WA Government has released the Coordinator General Guidelines. The Coordinator General Guidelines provide information on how the State Development Act will be applied in practise, the different notices and powers introduced under the State Development Act, and how potential Priority Projects and State Development Areas may be identified.
