Ninety-four cadet leaders and educators from 55 schools across Western Australia (WA)mgathered in Perth for the annual statewide Bush Rangers and River Rangers Cadet Leaders Conference.
The conference brought together participants from metropolitan, regional and remote schools to share ideas, build networks and explore opportunities for cadets across the State.
Delegates included representatives from schools across the Great Southern, Wheatbelt and South West regions, as well as remote communities including Wiluna, Broome and One Arm Point.
A key focus of this year's conference was recognising the educators and volunteers whose dedication has helped sustain Bush Rangers and River Rangers programs in schools and communities.
Fifteen-year volunteer service medals were awarded to Barbera Sing and Tiffany McLean. Ten-year volunteer service medals were awarded to Naga Mila, Matt Austin, Taylor Bell, Brooke Bleakley, Rob Dawson and Chris Leeuwangh.
The conference highlighted the important role Bush Rangers and River Rangers play in supporting young people to develop leadership skills, confidence, teamwork and a sense of community responsibility, while encouraging them to connect with and care for the environment.
Delegates participated in two days of immersive environmental learning experiences delivered across four venues throughout Perth.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions' (DBCA) education teams from Parks and Wildlife Service, Kings Park and Botanic Garden, and Perth Zoo showcased a range of environmental education programs available to Bush Rangers and River Rangers cadets.
The conference also recognised the contribution of the late Geoff Hurren, whose work helped establish the Bush Rangers and River Rangers programs.
Named in his honour, the Geoff Hurren Instructor Award for Excellence recognises exceptional instructors. This year's award was presented to Alannah Beck for leadership and commitment to environmental education.
As Cadets WA marks its 30th year, the program continues to provide opportunities for young people to learn, lead and contribute to their communities.
The Department of Communities funds and administers the Cadets WA program, supporting a range of cadet streams that help young Western Australians build skills, confidence and community connections.
