Commissioner for Equal Opportunity Dr John Byrne participated in February’s roundtable which was hosted by Jenness Gardner, CEO Economic Regulation Authority.

The discussion focused on flexible working arrangements which offer practical solutions that support gender equity in the workplace and benefit everyone, for example job redesign. As unpaid care for children and older parents continues to be provided predominantly by women, redesigning a job to replace a requirement to work full-time or fixed hours with part-time and job-sharing options not only clears a gender barrier, but offers better work-life balance to anyone in the role.

Under the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 it is unlawful to discriminate against a person on grounds including sex, family responsibility, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

The Commission’s program to educate about equal opportunity includes a range of training and information sessions. If you are interested in the Commission delivering a session to your community group, please contact us by email at training@eoc.wa.gov.au or phone 9216 3927.
