The Department of Communities’ Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) Working Group is championing accessibility and inclusion across the agency.
At the centre of the cross-divisional working group is the Communities' Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2023-2028, which is built on four pillars: participate and contribute, inclusive communities, living well, and rights and equity.
Their goal is to embed these principles into everyday operations, shaping how programs and services are developed and delivered.
"We want to see people thrive when they come to work for Communities," Bec Baldwin from the Strategic Workforce team said.
"We look at ways we can empower business areas to drive some of that inclusion and belonging themselves, with the tools and resources they need."
The team is also working towards becoming a Disability Confident Recruiter through the Australian Disability Network.
The Data Governance and Reporting (DGR) and Strategic Workforce Capability teams coordinate the working group meetings and collate information into the annual DAIP Progress Report.
"One of our responsibilities is to ensure divisional updates clearly show the benefits to people with disability and align with DAIP outcomes," Linden Ghergori from DGR said.
"Our report informs Communities' annual report and the Minister for Disability Services."
The Access and Inclusion team compiles data from more than 200 WA Government DAIP reports to prepare the Minister's DAIP Progress Report.
The DAIP working group brings together members with disability, carers, and people from diverse backgrounds.
Rel Morris from LQBTQIA+ Policy said:
"People in the community we serve are not a single identity or experience.
"It's important to acknowledge and understand what intersectionality looks like to inform more effective and sustainable responses that meet people where they are, and beyond.
"We can then engage with other divisions and identify opportunities to work together as One Communities, One Team."
Communities' DAIP aligns with the four pillars of the State Disability Strategy 2020-2030.
