Herring populations increase thanks to sustainable fishing plan

A recovery plan to save herring populations on the verge of disappearing seven years ago has proven to be successful.

The latest stock assessment by scientists at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development shows an increase in populations after a recovery plan implemented in 2015 reduced fishers’ total catch limits of the species by 50 per cent.

DPIRD continues to work closely with WA’s commercial and recreational fishers and industry groups like the Western Australian Fishing Industry Council and Recfishwest to sustainably manage herring populations and ensure we have fish for the future.
