National Reconciliation Week

News story
National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for National Reconciliation Week remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey - the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will - and must - continue.

This week we are commemorating and celebrating National Reconciliation Week with several events.

Today we kicked off at Prime House in Joondalup with a smoking ceremony, bush foods breakfast and watched Reconciliation WA's live event broadcast. View some highlights in the video below.

Tomorrow we welcome advocate for victims of crime and 2024 WA Australian of the Year 2024, Mechelle Turvey as our keynote speaker.

In 2022, Mechelle Turvey’s 15-year-old son, Cassius Turvey, was assaulted coming home from school and later died from his injuries. His death was a catalyst for a change to occur in Australia and to address the ongoing injustices Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples face today.

On Thursday we are aiming to raise $1,000 for ‘Wear it Yellow’! Staff will be wearing yellow to help support Children’s Ground as well as Reconciliation in our workplace.

Bringing our National Reconciliation Week celebrations to a close on Friday, some of our staff will join the Boorloo Walk for Reconciliation event at Langley Park. Together we will walk alongside the bilya (river) through the park, ending in solidarity at the Supreme Court Gardens.

We encourage everyone to join National Reconciliation Week events as well as reflect on this year’s theme, Now More Than Ever, to create a reconciled, healed and unified nation.
