Bundiyarra Aboriginal Community Aboriginal Corporation has been awarded the contract to deliver the program which supports Aboriginal families in making decisions regarding keeping their children safe and connected.
The contract award is part of the State Government’s $3 million commitment for the continuation of the AFLDM program pilot over 2024-25 and 2025-26.
The AFLDM program is an important service which aims to address the overrepresentation of Aboriginal children in the child protection system. When an Aboriginal family is involved with child protection, AFLDM allows the family meeting to be facilitated by an independent Aboriginal Convenor, employed by an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) to develop family led plans in a culturally safe space.
Through AFLDM, families are supported to make decisions with the aim of preventing children entering out-of-home care, increasing reunification of children with their families and ensuring children are connected to culture and their community. The contracted ACCO in the region provides families with a culturally safe space in which meetings are facilitated.
AFLDM is currently being delivered in two Western Australian districts; Mirrabooka and the Midwest-Gascoyne.
