Prison Officers permanently posted to Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison (EGRP) now qualify for a bonus of close to $12,000 for every three consecutive years they serve.

The Regional Retention Payment is a significant reward that is also cumulative so that after six years, for example, an officer would earn almost $24,000 extra on top of an already competitive salary.

Fortnightly Regional Incentive Allowances have also been bumped up for Prison Officers working at EGRP, to just over $325 a fortnight. That’s an increase of close to $110.00 fortnightly and adds up to just under $8500 a year, on top of standard salary.

Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce said the payments were a way of boosting local employment, attracting new Prison Officer recruits and rewarding length of service.

“Joining one of our teams across the State is already a rewarding career choice with Prison Officers contributing to a safer WA through the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners,” Commissioner Royce said.

“These new, boosted financial incentives make becoming a Prison Officer working in our Goldfields an even more rewarding career option while also contributing to the local community.”

The additional payments follow a regional-based Prison Officer training initiative announced last year, which offers Prison Officer recruits the opportunity to train in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

“The 12-week paid training course previously took place in Perth, with travel and time away from home cited as barriers for some regional residents,” Commissioner Royce said.

“Now, rather than taking people out of the community for three months at a time, we’re sending our Corrective Services Academy trainers to Kalgoorlie-Boulder to conduct paid training at EGRP.”

Successful applicants are paid $72,791 per annum during the Prison Officer training process, increasing to $94,082 - $107,133 (plus superannuation) upon commencement of shift work.

Those interested in applying for the next paid Prison Officer training course in the Goldfields can attend an upcoming Information Session and speak with staff about the job.

Information Sessions will be held at Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison on Thursday 21st August from 5.30 to 6.30pm, or online via MS Teams on Tuesday 2 September.
