On 31 July 2025, the Department of Communities’ child protection offices in the Goldfields District arranged for eight children in care to travel from Kalgoorlie to the remote community Warburton in Ngaanyatjarra Lands to spend time on Country and connect with their family and culture.

The Department’s Assistant District Director Goldfields, Elaine Roche, who travelled with the children, said they “were welcomed like little celebrities, with family coming from near and far to see them, making the trip a truly special adventure”.

“The excitement on their faces as they left Kalgoorlie, and the joy they felt arriving in community, knowing they were about to be reconnected with family, created cherished memories that will stay with them forever,” Elaine said.

“After spending time with family, the children went on a bush excursion with other kids from the community who showed them the ways on the Lands, including digging and cooking up bardies grubs.”

“The Goldfields District will certainly be making this a regular trip for our children in care.”

As part of this year’s WA Foster and Family Carer Week celebrations, the trip was also an opportunity for Goldfields District child protection staff to acknowledge the incredible foster and family carers on the Ngaanyatjarra Lands with a community barbecue.

“The Goldfields team who went on the trip utilised this time in community to undertake Family Finding to find connections for our children in care,” Elaine said.
