International Women’s Day 2026 was celebrated last week with the announcement of nearly $646,000 in grants and the release of the third action plan under Stronger Together: WA's Plan for Gender Equality.

The announcement coincides with this year’s theme, Balance the Scales, which highlights the need for a fairer and more accessible justice system for women and girls.
Twenty-four community organisations received a share of the funding through two Women’s Grants for a Stronger Future programs, aimed at building a better, fairer, more equitable Western Australia.

Administered by the Department of Communities, the annual program includes grants up of to $10,000 for community projects supporting women's health and wellbeing, safety and justice, leadership, and economic independence.

The second program, the Safety and Justice grants program, provided up to $150,000 for projects delivered over up to two years that contribute to the primary prevention of violence against women, with a focus on sexual violence.

Grant recipients include:

  • Women’s Legal Service WA – $10,000 for a pilot program developing resources and workshops to prevent and respond to technology‑facilitated abuse.
  • Housing Industry Association – $5,191 for the She Builds the Future program, promoting books and education materials in primary schools to encourage girls to consider careers in the residential building industry.
  • GKB Impact Pty Ltd – $10,000 for Reviving Noongar Voices, a community‑led initiative revitalising the Noongar language through interactive workshops and cultural storytelling involving female Elders, educators and young people.
  • Goldfields Women’s Health Care Association – $95,500 to deliver youth‑led, culturally safe campaigns in Kalgoorlie that challenge myths about sexual violence and increase understanding of consent and respectful relationships.
  • A $150,000 grant was also awarded to the Burnet Institute for The Gist, an education program that helps young people recognise and challenge harmful online content.

The Women's Grants for a Stronger Future Program aligns with the priority areas of the State Government's Stronger Together plan, a 10-year whole-of-government roadmap launched in March 2020 to drive meaningful, systemic change toward gender equality.

The third Stronger Together action plan, released last week, builds on the momentum of the first two action plans, which delivered 148 actions to improve outcomes for women and girls.

International Women’s Day is recognised globally on 8 March, celebrating women’s achievements while highlighting the work still required to achieve gender equality.
