Subi East will become one of Australia's most sustainable communities after receiving a 6 Star Green Star - Communities Rating, the highest accreditation achievable though the Green Building Council of Australia.

The 6 Star certification represents world leadership in sustainable precinct development, delivering enhanced liveability and healthy places through design excellence, environmental responsibility and opportunities for economic prosperity.

In being awarded the rating, the Subi East Redevelopment project recorded a total of 33 category achievements, with key sustainability elements including:

  • improved building energy and water use performance through sustainable building design guidelines resulting in lower greenhouse gases and operating costs;
  • design measures to reduce heat island effect and minimise impact of light emissions;
  • extensive public open space and addition of further amenities including playgrounds, training and physical activity areas;
  • extensive community engagement to identify key heritage and environmental features for retention and education of previous site histories; and
  • interpretive trails and interactive features to promote understanding of sustainability, rehabilitation, Indigenous heritage and football heritage.

Green Star is one of the world's first independent, transparent, national schemes designed to assess and certify the sustainability of large-scale master-planned development projects.

Projects must recertify every three to five years until fully built out to maintain their rating.

Subi East is DevelopmentWA's fourth project to receive Green Star accreditation and the third to receive the maximum 6 Star Community rating, sharing the accolade with Montario Quarter in Shenton Park and Alkimos Beach with partner Lendlease.

Subi East is one of the most significant urban redevelopment projects being undertaken in Western Australia and will see the rejuvenation of 35 hectares of inner-city land to create a new, vibrant north-eastern gateway to Subiaco.

Civil works and public realm landscaping works are underway at The Oval Precinct, which are expected to be completed in 2023.

Comments attributed to Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:

"Subi East is the most significant redevelopment project of its type in modern times and right from the start, we wanted to ensure good quality design and sustainability.

"Achieving a Green Star certification is no easy feat - to receive a maximum 6 Star Green Star - Communities accreditation is something of which we can all be enormously proud of.

"This project will see the delivery of a vibrant new gateway that raises the bar on urban planning and design, connected to top quality public transport links.

"By the end of this year alone, the Subi East project will have seen hundreds of jobs already created through the work at The Oval Precinct and Princess Margaret Hospital sites, with an overall total of 2,700 construction jobs expected to be generated through the project."
