Initiative
The Department of Communities is leading key child protection projects and initiatives to improve child protection practice, systems and outcomes.
Last updated:

In 2021, the Department of Communities (Communities) commissioned the Australian Centre for Child Protection (ACCP) to assist with the planning for the Western Australian child protection reform. The ACCP conducted the project in partnership with PwC Indigenous Services to ensure a strong cultural perspective across the work.

The ACCP report is now available, as well as Communities response to the actions and recommendations of the ACCP which includes a summary of the programs and initiatives underway. This response will be updated at six monthly intervals commencing in June 2023.

The ACCP report is ‘stage one’ of longer term child protection reform. The project has informed ‘stage two’ and the implementation of actions under Safe and Supported: The National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2021-2031.

Communities will continue to focus on continuous improvement and getting it right for Aboriginal children first and foremost. This work is being led by the Specialist Child Protection Unit who have responsibility for stewardship of the child protection system to improve outcomes for children, young people and their families through promotion of best practice.
