Ecosystem health in the Canning River, focusing on the influence of the Kent Street Weir

Technical Report
Water Science Technical Series report WST 50 - study to assess the health and condition of the Canning River aquatic ecosystem in the vicinity of the Kent Street Weir.
Last updated:

The purpose of this study was to address knowledge gaps to enhance management of the Kent Street Weir, in an effort to maximise ecosystem health while protecting the social values supported by the weir.

It is acknowledged the presence of the Kent Street Weir on the Canning River represents a departure from the natural condition and will elicit a response in ecosystem function.

However, the original purpose of the weir (maintenance of fresh water and water level upstream) remains valid today and accordingly its removal is not under review in this study.

Further, due to broadscale changes to the Swan-Canning ecosystem since European settlement, the weir’s removal would not return ecosystem function to its natural state.
