Electric vehicles and public charging stations are becoming more common in Western Australia.

Energy Policy WA has published an Information Paper on consumer protections for users of public electric vehicle charging stations.

A person that constructs, operates or sells electricity at an electric vehicle charging station is currently exempt from the requirement in the Electricity Industry Act 2004 to hold an electricity distribution or retail licence. These exemptions will expire on 30 June 2021.

Due to the absence of consumer protection concerns and the developing nature of the electric vehicle industry, Energy Policy WA proposes to request extension of the licence exemptions for public electric vehicle charging stations to 30 June 2024.

Before the extended licence exemptions expire, Energy Policy WA will consider the additional consumer protections that may be required for users of charging station services as the electric vehicle industry continues to develop, potentially forming part of a new Alternative Electricity Services Code for these services.
