About the strategy

The Pickering Brook and Surrounds Sustainability and Tourism Strategy (the Strategy) provides strategic planning guidance for tourism and agriculture-related growth within the Perth Hills.

A Project Taskforce and a Project Working Group with representatives from relevant State Government agencies, the cities of Kalamunda and Armadale and the local community has created two reports that outline sustainable options for the townsite and the surrounding area.

Part 1 report:

This report focuses on the potential sustainable expansion of the Pickering Brook townsite. A key recommendation is support for expansion of the townsite of approximately 14 hectares.

The report recommends that the City of Kalamunda prepare and submit a Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS) amendment request, so that the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) may consider rezoning the supported land area from Rural to Urban.

The local community will have another opportunity to have their say on the potential expansion of the Pickering Brook townsite should the WAPC initiate a MRS amendment process.

Part 2 report:

This report delivers 24 recommendations which will guide government at a local and State level to promote and grow sustainable tourism and agriculture industries.

The report recommends implementing measures that enhance the area’s agritourism prospects and which explore the potential of the Perth Hills as a major tourism destination, while retaining the area’s agricultural focus.

The recommendations include encouraging “farm gate” and cellar door food tourism, expanding accommodation offerings and extending the area’s trail network to create a new mountain bike hub.
