Confirmation of adoption process
Communities has a streamlined process for adults seeking to confirm if they are adopted. Unfortunately, the history of closed adoptions prior to the Adoption Act 1994 has meant that some adults have not been told they were adopted and may remain unaware of their adoption. For some, the discovery or disclosure of their adoption may occur following the death of their adoptive parents, accidental or unexpected disclosure by a relative or discovery of adoption records.
The process for adults to apply for confirmation of their adoption
Adults from the age 18 years can apply for confirmation of their adoption by completing an Application to Confirm an Adoption.
Applicants are required to provide one or two forms of verified photo identification, as indicated on page 4 of the application, and a statutory declaration when completing the application.
The search of information and records is prioritised for people seeking confirmation of their possible adoption.
When the application is received, Communities’ Adoption Services undertakes a thorough search of available information and records to confirm if the applicant is adopted. Communities can only provide confirmation of a person’s adoption where an Order for Adoption was granted in Western Australia.
When the search is complete an Adoption Services case worker will contact the applicant to provide confirmation of adoption and provide support and information about access to records and specialised counselling and support services.
