The Post Adoption Services team provide support and information for people involved in or impacted by adoptions in Western Australia (WA). Some services may also be for people who were born and adopted outside of WA.
Our services include assisting people to access information and records, connecting people to support services, support with search and contact, and support for people and families involved in or impacted by an adoption. The Post Adoption Services Team: About Us booklet (PDF, 1337KB) provides more information about our team.
Adoption legislation in WA commenced in 1896. Many adoptions were arranged privately through solicitors, with the role of the Department of Communities growing from 1959 when its role in providing adoption reports and approvals increased.
Adoption practices continued to change, and modern, or open, adoption was formalised with the new Adoption Act 1994 (the Act). The Act acknowledges the importance of information for people involved in an adoption and their relatives.
