Housing

The Department of Communities operates across the construction, property finance and human services sectors to create affordable housing opportunities for people who would otherwise have difficulty accessing appropriate housing.

The Department of Communities (Communities) works in partnership with the private, government and not-for-profit sectors to deliver social and affordable housing across Perth and in regional and remote WA.

In addition to providing housing, Communities assists with home loan finance through Keystart and provides rental assistance options such as bond assistance loans for people in need.

The Housing team is responsible for:

  • directly managing more than 35,000 public housing dwellings, with an interest in just under 10,000 properties managed by community housing organisations
  • managing around 5,000 properties for Government Regional Officers’ Housing (GROH)
  • providing housing for 122 Aboriginal communities in remote locations across the state
  • constructing new social and affordable housing and overseeing the maintenance and refurbishment of public housing properties.

The Department of Communities is in the process of migrating its web presence to WA.gov.au. For now, you can find out more about our Housing portfolio on the legacy Housing website.
