National Principle 5 – People working with children and young people are suitable and supported to reflect child safety and wellbeing values in practice

Principle 5 of the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.
Last updated:

Child safe and friendly organisations will take all necessary steps to identify the most suitable people to work with children and discourage unsuitable people from applying or being appointed, describing recruitment and staff development policies, including appropriate screening, that are a foundation of child safe organisations.

This Principle includes understanding child safety responsibilities within induction processes, appropriate supervision of staff and volunteers, as well as workplace reporting obligations, relevant training, information sharing and cultural safety concepts (Commissioner for Children and Young People, 2019; Australian Human Rights Commission 2018).

  • Child safe recruitment and staff management brochure (PDF, 1.18MB) – Department of Communities – guides organisations to adopt child safe practices in recruitment, staff induction and training, and supervision and management.
  • Working with Children Check – WA Government – a compulsory screening strategy for people engaged in child related work in Western Australia and the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. It is an important part of the measures that an organisation should have in place to protect children and young people from abuse and neglect.
  • Volunteers and staff checklist – Commissioner for Children and Young People.
