Western Australian charities and not-for-profit organisations can now apply to benefit from the proceeds of Boronia Pre-release Centre for Women’s annual Gala Day charity event.
Each year the minimum-security facility in Bentley opens its doors to the public for the Gala Day and sells everything from art to baked goods, handicraft to plants, all produced by prisoners from across WA.
Boronia’s Gala Day tradition began in 2005 and since then has raised more than $414,000 for various charities and not-for-profit organisations based in Western Australia.
Sue Andrews, Manager Family and Community Services at Boronia, says the residents take great pride in the opportunity to give back to the community.
“We’re looking for applicants which operate at a grassroots level and rely primarily on the efforts of volunteers and local community support,” Ms Andrews says.
In 2025 the $32,800.80 raised at Gala Day was shared with The Women and Infants Research Foundation. The Foundation provides essential care, support and information that makes a difference to the lives of women, babies and families.
The 2026 beneficiary is Fostering Hope Australia. This volunteer-run organisation supports children being placed into out-of-home care, and the children’s foster and grandparent carers who take on the vital role of caring for these children.
About Boronia Community Engagement and Advisory Group
Show moreCEAG supports the development of skills through the completion of meaningful activities while the women are in prison and when they are released into the community.
CEAG achieves this by identifying and making recommendations to staff and residents about:
- Employment and training opportunities.
- Opportunities and leadership for reparation projects.
- On-site and community volunteering activities.
The innovative design and daily activities at Boronia mirror the responsibilities faced by women in everyday life and support a strong community and family focus. The women contribute to society through voluntary work that builds positive relationships with the community. These relationships can be key to their successful integration on release.
Boronia is committed to maintaining strong community engagement and support and this commitment has been demonstrated through the annual Gala Day event.
The residents at Boronia take great pride in the opportunities Gala Day provides them to give back to the community. Gala Day also offers opportunities for the women to take on wider responsibilities and plays an important role in a woman’s rehabilitation and preparation for reintegration back into the community.
Gala Day is a positive restorative justice initiative that supports local not for profit organisations and charities.
The CEAG invite all eligible organisations to make an application to become the beneficiary of the money raised from the Gala Day event.
