When do I have to convert my property?

To find out when your property will need to transition, visit ATCO's map. Here you will be able to search your address, find the date your zone will be decommissioned from and the timing for your conversion period.

We will contact you via email and post when it is your time to transition so you will not need to do anything until then.

What support will I receive?

As part of the Albany Gas Transition Program, the WA Government will provide funding support, regardless of the energy source you are transitioning to.

The WA Government will cover the cost of a standard transition to LPG bottles for households and small gas-use businesses.

Alternatively, the WA Government will provide a contribution of up to $2,000 towards the cost of purchasing and installing electric appliances, if you’d prefer.

For complex cases, where a trade registered to participate in the Transition Program has found that conversion to bottled gas is not possible or will cost significantly more than a standard transition, additional support will be provided on a case-by-case basis.

Residential and small gas-use business customers who have converted their property from the ATCO reticulated gas network between 19 January 2026 and 31 December 2026 will be eligible for a capped rebate of up to $1,600 for bottled gas (LPG)  and up to $2,000 for all-electric conversions. This rebate is a limited time exception to the standard program process, recognising that some customers chose to convert early without full knowledge of the requirements for accessing Government funding under the program. Evidence of conversion works, including an invoice from a licenced trade, proof of payment, and photograph of works will be required for verification. Rebate applications and payments will go live on 1 January 2027.

Rebates will not be provided for conversions undertaken after 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, the government funding for residential and small gas-use business customers will be paid directly to the trades carrying out the conversion works. Customers will need to wait until they have been notified that their zone is live before arranging their conversion works to be eligible for this funding assistance.

To access the government funding, you must follow the process outlined in the information pack that you’ll receive once it’s your turn to transition. Assistance payments will be made directly to registered trades participating in the Transition Program.

What will I need to do?

Once the Transition Program goes live in your zone, the first thing you’ll need to do is choose which energy source to switchover to.

Switching over to LPG bottles

For many households and small gas-use businesses, this will likely be the most straightforward approach. You won’t have to switch out any gas appliances, as they will continue to work with LPG bottles.

What will happen on the day?

A registered gas fitter will disconnect the existing supply at your gas meter, safely cap the connection, and install the new piping and gas regulator needed to connect your new gas bottles. A list of LPG bottle retailers is available below.

Please note: Gas bottles should be delivered before the conversion work takes place and be housed in a suitable, compliant area with a flat surface.

During the quote stage, your gas fitter will assess the proposed gas bottle location to ensure it meets safety and compliance requirements. If there isn’t a suitable location, they will initiate a complex case assessment in our system so we can help to find a solution.

Switching over to all-electric appliances

You may prefer to take this opportunity to go all-electric.

As all assistance payments are made directly to registered trades, you may need to arrange the purchase and installation of your selected appliances through your registered trade, who will claim the funding contribution on your behalf.

How will the conversion happen?

A gas fitter will disconnect the gas supply at your gas meter and cap it off before an electrician attends to install your new electric appliances. In some cases, the same trade will be qualified to carry out both tasks. Depending on what is being installed, a plumber and a refrigeration and air conditioning technician may also be needed.

To help you reach a decision, you’ll need to know the cost for each option you are considering. You will need to get quotes from relevant trades registered with the Transition Program. A list of registered trades will be provided with your information pack.

Steps you'll need to take

Once the Transition Program is live in your zone, these are the steps you’ll need to take to receive government funding to transition:

  1. Contact trades from the approved trades list to provide a quote. The list of approved trades will be available for you to choose from once the Transition Program is live in your zone.

  2. Decide which option best suits your needs and confirm your choice with your preferred registered trade. Your trade will upload the quote to our system for approval. Complex cases will be flagged in our system by the trade during the quote stage.

  3. Once your quote has been approved, we’ll let you know to go ahead and book in the work with your trade at a time that suits you.

  4. If you choose to transition to LPG bottles, you’ll need to select your preferred gas bottle retailer and arrange for the bottles to be delivered and placed in a compliant and secure location before the conversion works happen.  We’ll provide you with a list of Albany-based gas bottle retailers once the Transition Program is live in your zone.

  5. Your chosen trade will then attend your property on the agreed date to carry out the required works. Remember, if you choose to switch over to all-electric appliances, you will need to cover any additional costs by paying the trade directly.

  6. Once the work is complete, your trade will submit their invoice to us, and we will pay them directly, up to the approved funding amount. The only thing left to do is pay your final bill to Alinta Energy, which will be sent to you once ATCO attends your property in the following weeks to take a final reading and remove your meter.

LPG bottled gas retailers

If you are switching to LPG bottles, you need to make sure you have organised the payment and delivery of your new gas bottles before your chosen trade attends your property to complete the conversion works.

If you are installing a gas bullet or tank, you’ll need to arrange for your first tank of gas to be delivered once the tank or bullet has been installed.

There are three bottled gas suppliers in Albany. For details on pricing and subscriptions, please contact the suppliers directly.

What if my transition is a complex case?

‘A ‘complex case’ is when conversion to LPG bottles is not possible or will cost significantly more than a standard transition. This will usually be identified during the quote stage when a registered trade visits your property and registers your case in our system.

Our case management team will then assess your situation to determine the most suitable energy solution and any additional funding support available to assist with your transition.
