Community Initiatives Grant Program

The Government of Western Australia has made funds available from the Road Trauma Trust Account (RTTA) for community initiatives that assist in promoting road safety across the state.

Target areas include key performance indicators within the Driving Change - Road Safety Strategy 2020-2030, including Safe Road Users, Safe Roads, Safe Vehicles, Safe Speeds, and Post-Crash Response.

The Road Safety Commission’s Community Initiatives Grant Program supports the development and implementation road safety projects and applicable project costs, to engage community on a relevant road safety issue. The project, which can run for up to 12 months, will aim to positively influence behaviour on WA roads to help make every journey safe. 

Eligible organisations can apply for Project Grants up to $25,000.

Who can apply

Who is eligible to apply for Community Initiatives grants?

We encourage the following groups to apply:

  • Incorporated not-for-profit organisations
  • Western Australian local governments Health organisations
  • Schools (including incorporated Parents and Citizens Associations)
    Schools are encouraged to explore our RoadSmart program before continuing with an application

To be funded by the Community Initiatives Grant Program, your organisation must:

  • Have a current Australian Business Number (or have proof you have applied for one) that is not for a commercial entity or an individual.
  • Be incorporated.
  • Abide by relevant State and Federal legislation, as applicable; for example, in respect to Working with Children Screening, Criminal Record Checking and Liquor Control.

Who is not eligible to apply for Community Initiatives grants?

The Community Initiatives Grant Program will not fund the following:

  • Unincorporated organisations*
  • Profit-making organisations*
  • Sole-traders*
  • State government agencies
  • Applications deemed aligned with initiatives listed under the ‘What won’t be funded’ section on page 6 of the Grant Guidelines are also ineligible for funding.

*Road Safety Commission may accept applications from appropriate organisations where there is no other suitable organisation to apply.

When to apply

Applications for Road Safety Commission Community Initiatives Project grants are now open and will close 5pm 12th of August 2026.

Applications for Road Safety Commission Community Initiatives Event grants are currently closed. If you have an idea for a one-off event and are seeking funding, please get in touch with us to discuss how you might be able to expand its impact.

What to expect once you have applied

Community Initiatives grant funding is awarded through a competitive application process.

Once applications close, the following steps are undertaken:

  • Applications are checked for eligibility and compliance.
  • Eligible applications are assessed by an Assessment Panel.
  • Assessment Panel recommendations are submitted to the Minister for Road Safety for endorsement.
  • Applicants are notified of the outcome of their application by email.
  • Unsuccessful applicants are provided feedback from the Assessment Panel to assist with future applications.
  • Successful applicant submits invoice to Road Safety Commission Finance Team to receive funding.
