A new project to protect bilbies and improve habitat has been launched at Tharra (Woodstock Abydos Protected Reserve). Following the success of the weed management project by Budadee Rangers, a Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis) scheme is being delivered by Budadee Aboriginal Corporation in partnership with Terra Rosa Consulting and with technical support from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

Baseline survey and knowledge development

The rangers did a series of track-based surveys combining traditional knowledge and best-practice survey methodology across 2023 and 2024 to establish a baseline understanding of suspected Greater Bilby populations in Tharra. The results identified Tharra as an area of significant habitat for bilbies, with occupancy levels among the highest in the Pilbara. Budadee produced a fauna report describing these bilby populations and identifying long-term management actions to protect and improve priority habitat. These efforts were guided by Elders, who advocated for invasive species management and the re-establishment of cultural burns at Tharra.

Funding and program implementation

In December 2024, the Minister for Environment granted Budadee about $3.8 million over five years to implement a cultural burn and feral cat management program. The intent is to protect and improve bilby habitat on Tharra.

Regulatory significance and alignment with Traditional Owners

For the Pilbara Environmental Offsets Fund, this is the first on-ground project that relates to a species listed as a Matter of National Environmental Significance under the Commonwealth Environment Protection Biodiversity Act 1999. The goal is to deliver positive outcomes for threatened species while aligning with Traditional Owner aspirations in caring for Country.
