Communication, teamwork and responsibility are among the skills girls at Banksia Hill learned as they braved the rain to bring empty garden beds to life.

The new gardening project is part of a collaboration with the WA Police Force Youth Policing Division, giving officers the chance to rebuild positive relationships with young people who have come into contact with the law.

The Detention Centre’s Principal Youth Education Sandra Dusz said hands on learning also offered other benefits.

"It's teaching them important skills … they can apply to their academics and also employment opportunities when they arise."
