Landowners and farmers are being asked to help develop a new web-based app that will link to the latest and most accurate research information on saltland management in Western Australia.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) in collaboration with the Gillamii Group has developed Stage One of the Saltland Genie app, which will be tested at the upcoming Dowerin Machinery Field Days on 25 and 26 August.

DPIRD senior development officer Justin Hardy said potential users were encouraged to visit the department’s display and provide feedback on the app’s performance and technical content.

“Once finalised, the Saltland Genie app will provide streamlined access to up-to-date information on saltland management to support landowners to rehabilitate salt-affected land,” Mr Hardy said.

“Feedback from potential users is vital to ensure the web-based app provides the right information in an easy to use format so we encourage field day participants to visit the display and put it through its paces.”

The department’s display shed will be at full capacity at this year’s field day and promises to be bigger and better after the event was cancelled last year due to COVID restrictions.

DPIRD field day coordinator Christine Campbell said livestock would also be a big focus at this year’s display.

“Livestock producers can find out how to get the most out of the updated Sheep Condition Scoring app and seasonal information using the Pastures from Space online tool,” Ms Campbell said

“The Livestock Compliance team will be available to meet farmers and industry representatives and DPIRD inspectors will provide advice on the new Animal Welfare (Transport, Saleyards and Depots) (Cattle and Sheep) Regulations 2020.

“Livestock producers can discuss animal health issues and biosecurity, as well as obtain help with brands, stock ID and National Livestock Identification System queries.”

The Water Smart Farms project will be showcased and advise on ways to improve water supply infrastructure for livestock.

Department biosecurity officers and local Recognised Biosecurity Group members are teaming up to talk about declared pest management, including wild dogs, feral pigs and weed species, such as cactus and skeleton weed.

The department shed can be found on Uberin Street at Dowerin Machinery Field Days on 25 and 26 August.
