The Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS) collects personal information for the purpose of:

  • regulating health and safety of workers, at workplaces; 
  • regulating risks to health and safety arising from work and for related purposes;
  • processing your application and verifying your eligibility;
  • maintaining licence and registration records;
  • undertaking compliance and enforcement activities;
  • engagement and educational activities; 
  • other regulatory functions.

Your personal information is collected under the relevant provisions of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020.

If you do not provide the requested information, LGIRS may be unable to process your application or provide the relevant licence or service.

Your information may be included in an online licence search, published in a register, or disclosed where authorised or required by law. This may include to other government agencies, regulatory bodies, medical or technical experts, employers, trainers, and other third parties.

Apply for your licence and pay the licence fee.

Class A asbestos removal allows the removal of: 

  • friable asbestos (material that can be easily crumbled or turned to powder by hand when dry)
  • asbestos contaminated dust that is associated with friable asbestos
  • non-friable asbestos. 

For Class A licences, a nominated supervisor must be on site at all times while work is being carried out. The nominated supervisor is responsible for overseeing asbestos work and must demonstrate competency in safe asbestos practices.

Before you apply

1. You'll need:

  • To nominate at least one supervisor (you can nominate yourself or someone else) and provide the following details:
    • Proof of identification such as a driver licence or passport
    • Evidence of training (CPCCDE4008 and CPCCDE3015)
    • Detailed evidence of six (6) jobs over three (3) years to demonstrate experience
      • If the nominated person is already an approved nominated supervisor working under a Class A licence (in any state or territory), you don’t need to provide examples of experience. Approval may be granted based on their compliance history. If this applies, attach proof of their existing approval.
    • Two (2) written references to verify the work experience - physically signed and dated.
  • A completed supervisor nomination form
  • A certified safety management system (SMS certified to AS/NZS ISO 45001:2018 within 3 years by JAS-ANZ, Exemplar Global, or qualified auditor)
  • Visa/Mastercard for fee payment.

What happens next

Licence applications typically take 6-8 weeks to process. WorkSafe will:

  • Assess your application and decide if an asbestos removal licence can be issued. We will contact you if we need more information to process your application. Please check your emails regularly, including your spam. 
  • Withdrawn or refused New Class A applications are eligible for a partial refund only.
  • If granted, we will add your licence details to the WA Online Licence Search
  • Asbestos removal licences are valid for 5 years.
  • You must notify WorkSafe at least 5 working days before you start any licensed asbestos removal work and comply with all the conditions specified on the licence. 
  • Your nominated supervisor must be present when you carry out Class A asbestos removal work.

Body corporate applicants

  • Complete all parts of the application form related to body corporate applicants.
  • When answering the probity questions note that you are answering for all directors of the body corporate and the body corporate itself. 
  • If you are operating under a business name, attach a copy of your extract of registration.
  • Unless you have a sole director the declaration must be signed by two company directors or a director and the company secretary.
