Deliver

A guide for public sector agencies to develop and implement formal code of conduct training.

Deliver training that is planned well and run smoothly. Have new facilitators practice delivering the content several times to feel confident. While an expert facilitator does not need coaching on delivery, they may need support on the content. If the presenter is external to the agency have an agency representative at the training to answer any questions specific to the agency’s code or policies.

Run a pilot

Consider running a ‘pilot’ before the first training. Use a group of colleagues as learners and get their honest feedback about what worked and what did not so any issues can be fixed before rolling out the training more broadly.

Use technology

Master the technology being used so training is smooth and engaging. Test it before the training or get assistance. Consider having someone else run the technology as it is difficult to monitor chats, run videos and conduct polls while delivering content. Have a backup plan if the technology does not work.

Prepare for delivery

On the day, the facilitator is in charge of the training and learners. They set the tone and are responsible for getting key learnings across and maximising participation.

Considerations:

  • Re-read the training plan, facilitation notes and resources. Have everything required in easy reach.
  • Be prepared with a collection of stories, anecdotes and case studies that enhance the content. Storytelling is memorable and brings training to life.
  • Start with an anecdote or question about a relevant integrity problem. Ask learners to be ready to solve the problem by the end based on what they have learned.
  • Read the room (real or virtual) during training. Adult learners have different learning styles so engage in different ways.
  • Have techniques prepared in advance to manage the room such as bringing contentious issues under control and getting quiet learners to contribute. All discussions need to be respectful and well facilitated to ensure learning outcomes and objectives are covered.
  • Address online feedback or questions when delivering virtual or hybrid training. Consider using a moderator to encourage questions or chat on online platforms – and have that person feed back to the facilitator and/or leaners.
