About our program

The departments of Biodiversity, Conversation and Attractions; Communities; Planning, Lands and Heritage; the Premier and Cabinet; Health; Justice; and Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, and the Western Australia Police Force have joined forces again to deliver an innovative Interagency Data Science Graduate Program.

We are looking for talented and motivated individuals interested in experiencing a dynamic range of data science work:

  • Use machine learning models and artificial intelligence to predict clinical deteriorations and transform the way WA Health services care for our patients (Health in a Virtual Environment).
  • Make data about the WA environment more discoverable, accessible and useable (Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions).
  • Analyse whole of government data to evaluate the holistic impact of programs and interventions (Department of Premier and Cabinet).
  • Use data science to inform investigations, solve crimes faster, and help keep the community safe (Western Australia Police Force).
  • Produce powerful analytics to provide better support in emergency situations and to vulnerable citizens (Department of Communities).
  • Use coding and geospatial techniques to analyse data to shape the future of our cities, regions and towns (Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage).
  • Contribute to data-driven road safety programs and enhanced road safety outcomes (Road Safety Commission)
  • Analysis and modelling of linked crime datasets to extract valuable insights and support evidence-based decision-making, research, and evaluation (Department of Justice).
  • Use machine learning to create representative synthetic health datasets, develop techniques to improve health data linkage (Department of Health).
  • Leverage data science to seize the opportunity to contribute to the growth of Western Australia’s defence, international education, science, and innovation sectors (Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation).

Completing this 12 month program provides data science graduates the opportunity to work on a range of statewide projects and initiatives, help improve the lives of Western Australians, and build the digital capability of the public sector.

Participants will help shape public sector decisions and policy, and work in innovative and flexible workplaces supported by passionate staff.  

By joining the Interagency Data Science Graduate Program, graduates will develop the skills, experience and networks required for an exciting career in the public sector.

Attributes we are seeking in candidates

  • Innovative thinkers
  • Strong communicators
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
    • A data programming language
    • Analysis of geospatial data
    • Statistical modelling
    • Data visualisation software experience (PowerBI, Tableau, etc.)
  •  A graduate or postgraduate qualification in data science, computer science, geospatial information, and any data or technology related discipline completed between 2021 to 2023
